Rail supplier news from Alstom and Urban Engineers

Alstom has been commissioned by Larsen & Toubro Ltd. India to supply 39 trainsets of six cars each, communications based train control signaling system, and five years of maintenance services for the Mumbai Metro Line 4, Alstom officials said in a press release. L&T was awarded the contract by Mumbai Metro Regional Development Authority to provide rolling stock, CBTC signaling and train control, platform screen doors, depot machinery and plant, and five years of maintenance for Line 4, a 22-mile elevated passenger-rail corridor with 32 stations between Wadala in Central Mumbai and Kasarvadavali in Thane. Alstom will design the trainsets in its Bangalore, Karnataka, engineering center; propulsion manufacturing will take place in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu; and bogies will be manufactured in Savli, Gajarat, all in India. The total value for Alstom's services and products amounts to "a few hundred million euros," Alstom officials said.

An infrastructure upgrade project by Urban Engineers Inc. and South Jersey Port Corp. was awarded the 2025 Distinguished Engineering Award by the New Jersey Alliance for Action. The $7.4 million project involved modernizing the port's Balzano Marine Terminal rail system, tripling freight throughput capacity and reducing emissions, Urban Engineers officials said in a press release. Located in Camden, New Jersey, the terminal's rail network was constructed in the 1930s. Urban Engineers assessed the existing rail conditions and developed the plans to replace and rehabilitate tracks. The firm's work included streamlining the rail layout, designing embedded rail systems, designing plans for where freight rail meets the cargo crane system, upgrading stormwater drainage infrastructure, and providing construction phase services such as field evaluations and design revisions. The terminal offers connections to CSX, Norfolk Southern Railway and Canadian Pacific Kansas City via its on-dock rail infrastructure.
