The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is seeking input on its updated State Freight Plan, which identifies future improvements to the state's transportation system for the movement of goods. Comments are due by Oct. 13 and can be submitted online.
ADOT is required by federal law to update the plan every five years. The draft updated plan includes a comprehensive overview of the status of freight and goods movements in the state and border crossing improvements; forecasts of future freight transportation demand through 2050; proposals for future freight projects; and assessments and strategies to reduce bottlenecks.
During the year-long plan update process, ADOT worked with a Freight Advisory Committee comprising more than 60 freight industry representatives, ADOT officials said in a press release. The study team prioritized transportation needs to draft a list of projects that will address bottlenecks and fulfill plan goals of safety, mobility, competitiveness and stewardship.
Union Pacific Railroad, BNSF Railway and eight short lines operate in Arizona, for a combined 1,882-mile freight-rail network, according to a 2025 report from the Association of American Railroads that was included in the updated freight plan.
