Renovations at the Port of Savannah’s Ocean Terminal are now more than 60% done, and the new 2,650-foot berth has started accepting ships.
The terminal will only work smaller vessels until mid-fall 2027, when the first phase of the project's container yard renovation is completed, Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) officials announced Sept. 29. The entire yard renovation is slated for completion by the end of 2028.
The $1.6 billion renovation project will grow the terminal’s annual capacity from 200,000 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) to 1.75 million TEUs, port officials said.
The project is part of GPA's $5 billion capacity enhancement plan that will, over the next decade, support future supply chain requirements by adding five container berths at the Savannah port and one roll-on/roll-off berth at the Brunswick port, GPA officials said.
“Transforming a 200-acre terminal while keeping the port operating is a tremendous undertaking, and the progress at Ocean Terminal is a testament to the hard work of our GPA team and our partners,” said GPA Chair Alec Poitevint.
The terminal is served by CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway.
