Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) has logged a decrease in the rate of crimes committed against riders between the end of 2024 and the latest quarter.
Crimes committed against riders per million trips fell 67% in the period, while ridership grew. Over the same period, the number of delays related to BART Police Department and safety-relayed delays dropped 47%, BART officials said in a press release.
BART credits the decrease in crime in part to the installation of new fare gates last year. September marks one year since BART completed the installation of Next Generation Fare Gates at all 50 stations.
"BART's new fare gates prove without a doubt that investing to improve and modernize our public transit infrastructure pays off big time," said Libby Schaaf, president and CEO of the Bay Area Council. "BART riders want and deserve nothing less than a safe, convenient and clean system and BART has delivered."
Early results indicate the gates could increase BART's annual revenue by $10 million as a result of lower fare evasion, BART officials added. The transit agency is already piloting an advanced motor gear system to further strengthen the gates' resistance to repeated impacts, with testing being conducted at Coliseum and Pittsburg Center stations.
