The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) and the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) both approved safety upgrades in their respective states this week.
The ICC authorized the installation of new automatic warning devices and circuitry at a BNSF Railway Co. grade crossing in Adams County near Camp Point, ICC officials said in a press release. The estimated cost of the project is $317,704. ICC recommend the state’s Grade Crossing Protection Fund be used to pay 95% of the project cost, with BNSF paying the remaining 5%.
BNSF also will be responsible for future maintenance costs and the installation of temporary signage until the new automatic warning devices are installed. All work must be completed within 18 months from the order date.
Meanwhile, the PUCO approved safety upgrades to two crossings in Preble and Lucas Ccunties. Norfolk Southern Railway will install flashing lights at a crossing in Eaton, Preble County, by Nov. 5. Federal funding will pay $493,319 to complete the project, according to a PUCO press release.
Toledo Refining Co. will install flashing lights and gates in Oregon, Lucas County, by Feb. 5, 2026. Federal funding of $335,521 will be used to complete the project.
Local government agencies in the two Ohio counties are permitted to seek additional funding from PUCO to cover the cost of additional safety improvements such as rumble strips and illumination.
