Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Last week, the Université de Montréal (UdeM) exercised a $15.4 million option to buy Canadian Pacific Railway’s Outremont, Quebec, yard and use the land to build a campus.
The campus would be an extension of the university’s main Mount Royal campus. College officials will work with government agencies to remediate the site.
The acquisition contract stipulates that yard activities cease as soon as a relocation agreement is reached with various governments. CPR will retain a line connecting the Port of Montreal to Saint-Luc Yard, but relocate tracks toward the property’s northern edge.
“Bringing this large property back into the urban weave will mean better harmonization with the surrounding areas [and] enable the rail links and services that are essential to Montreal’s economy to remain in place,” said CPR Vice President of Government Affairs Ronald Bilodeau in a prepared statement.
