House passes TEA 21 reauthorization bill

On April 2, the House passed Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (TEA LU) (H.R. 3550). The reauthorization bill would provide $275 billion during the next six years, including $51.5 billion for transit programs.

During House debates, the bill was amended to apply the existing Buy America rolling stock standard to manufactured products.

In February, the Senate passed a reauthorization bill that would provide $318 billion during the next six years, including $56.6 billion for transit. But White House officials have indicated the president would veto a bill proposing a funding level higher than $256 billion.

Both bills now will be considered by a congressional conference committee comprising House and Senate members. TEA 21’s short-term extension expires April 30.
