The Women’s Transportation Seminar recently named New Jersey Transit Board Director Flora Castillo the 2003 Greater New York "Woman of the Year." The award recognizes a woman who has directly contributed toward the advancement of women through programs or opportunities in the transportation industry, according to a prepared statement.
Since her board appointment in 1999, Castillo has promoted diversity in the transportation industry and been an advocate for minority employees and passengers. As board director, she has initiated diversity programs and encouraged female participation in those programs. Most recently, Castillo helped create NJ Transit’s Transit Academy mentoring program, which provides high school students information on career opportunities in the transportation industry.
Founded in 1977, the Women’s Transportation Seminar aims to promote industry and government recognition of women’s involvement in transportation.
