The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) last week opened three new elevators at the 149th Street-Hostos subway station, making it fully accessible.
The station is served by MTA New York City Transit subway lines 2, 4 and 5, and it serves 9,000 daily riders. The MTA installed one three-stop elevator that connects the street, upper platform and lower mezzanine, and two elevators that connect the upper platform to the lower platform, MTA officials said in a press release.
The station was built more than 100 years ago, when accessibility was not the priority it is today, said MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber. It is the eighth subway station to be made accessible in 2026; 30 additional stations are currently under construction to improve accessibility.
In addition to the three new elevators, crews installed two new mezzanine-to-platform stairways, a new fare control area, LED lighting, artwork, fire and public address systems and security cameras. Crews also fully restored the station's 120-year old headhouse, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, MTA officials said.
The design-build team for the 149th Street-Hostos station upgrades was Tully Construction Corp. and STV. The elevator manufacturer and installer was Mid-American.
