RailWorks Corp. and its subsidiary L.K. Comstock on Sept. 17 completed a critical segment of infrastructure work for the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority's (VTA) Eastridge to BART Regional Connector light-rail extension.
The intersection of Capitol Avenue and Wilbur Avenue in East San Jose, California, was closed for two weeks to allow crews to connect new light-rail systems and install overhead contact systems (OCS) to the VTA's Alum Rock Station.
Over the course of the outage, RailWorks and L.K. Comstock teams completed track, civil, traction power, OCS, signal and communications work that required precise planning and coordination, RailWorks officials said in a press release.
Among other work, crews removed 476 track feet of ballasted track and 216 track feet of roadway crossing panels. They also installed 216 track feet of embedded track, 700 tons of sub-ballast and 400 tons of ballast, 144 concrete ties, 960 linear feet of track, and 12,000 feet of interduct, fiber and copper cable.
"This outage represents the very best of what our teams can accomplish when working toward a common goal," said Pooya Pahlevani, RailWorks project manager. "Completing this volume of work within a compressed shutdown window required exceptional collaboration across every discipline. By leveraging the combined expertise of RailWorks and L.K. Comstock, we exceeded production goals while achieving a critical milestone for VTA and demonstrating the value of a fully integrated approach to delivering complex transit infrastructure projects."
When completed, the full VTA Eastridge to BART Regional Connector project will extend light-rail service 2.4 miles from the Alum Rock Light Rail Station to the Eastridge Transit Center via an elevated guideway located primarily in the center of the Capitol Expressway. The project also calls for construction of a new elevated station at Story Road and an at-grade station at the Eastridge Transit Center, according to the VTA project webpage.
