VIA Rail Canada Inc. reported ridership soared 106.5% to 874,700 riders during first-quarter 2023 compared with ridership levels during the same period a year ago.

Total revenue for the quarter increased 147.1% to CA$85.5 million. Operating expenses rose 35.1% primarily due to higher staffing and train operation costs associated with increased train miles operated and higher fuel prices.

Also during the quarter, VIA Rail continued to roll out new trains for the Quebec City-Windsor corridor and tested a new reservation system.

"VIA Rail's activities bounced back during the first quarter of 2023, surpassing the record levels that we set in 2019," said VIA Rail Chief Financial Officer Marie-Claude Cardin in a press release.
