Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (L.A. Metro) boardings on subway and light-rail networks in September rose 1.7% year over year to 5,960,493.
While average weekday ridership dipped 2%, weekend ridership rose 6.5% on Saturdays and 9.4% on Sundays, L.A. Metro officials said in a press release. Over the past three quarters, rider satisfaction on the rail networks also rose from 76% to 81%.
L.A. Metro officials partially attribute the ridership growth to the opening of the A Line from Azusa to Pomona, California, which opened in late September. The expansion extends light-rail service from Pomona to Long Beach. The E Line was one of L.A. Metro's strongest performing light-rail lines in September. The transit authority logged 1,508,087 boardings on the E Line in September, a 6.7% increase over last September. Weekday ridership rose 4.7%; Saturday ridership rose 3.5%; and Sunday ridership was up 10.8%.
Events continue to drive weekend ridership, L.A. Metro officials said. For example, light-rail boardings jumped 65% at the Pico Station near the Los Angeles Convention Center during the Sept. 26-28 LA Comic Con. L.A. Metro is also making progress on safety initiatives.
