The Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI) fell 0.3% in June from May's level to 134.9, decreasing for the third consecutive month, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
On a year-over-year basis, the index fell 1.7%. The Freight TSI measures the amount of cargo carried by for-hire freight transportation providers.
"The Freight TSI decreased in June due to decreases in air freight, rail carloads, pipeline and water, while rail intermodal and trucking volumes increased," BTS officials said in a press release.
Meanwhile, the Passenger TSI rose 0.2% in June from May's mark, rising for the second consecutive month. Year over year, the index rose 1/8%.
The Passenger TSI measures passenger volumes from local transit providers, intercity rail services and air transportation companies. The passenger TSI's June increase was due to increases in rail passenger and transit volumes, while air passenger traffic remained unchanged, BTS officials said.
The combined total Freight and Passenger TSI dipped 0.1% in June from the prior month and slipped 0.4% from June 2025's level.
