The Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority (L.A. Metro) on Sept. 19 began operating passenger service on its A Line rail extension from Azusa to the cities of Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne and Pomona in the San Gabriel Valley.

The extension adds 9 miles to the current 48.5-mile Long Beach-to-Azusa Metro Line A and brings rail service to communities without it since 1951, when the Pacific Electric Railway Monrovia-Glendora ceased operation, L.A. Metro officials said in a press release.

Constructed by the Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority, the extension was built on time and within its $1.5 billion budget. Construction began in 2020 and was funded by Los Angeles County's Measure R and Measure M transportation sales taxes, and through the California State Transportation Agency. L.A. Metro handles operations.

Its operative date marks the ninth project completed in L.A. Metro's "Twenty-Eight by '28" initiative, a plan to enhance the region's transit service before Los Angeles hosts the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
