North Carolina DOT upgrades track, signals along key corridor

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) recently completed a $7 million signal and track improvement project between downtown Raleigh and downtown Cary.

Crews installed new bi-directional signals and upgraded track to increase passenger train speeds from 60 mph to 79 mph and boost efficiency for freight trains.

NCDOT plans to upgrade a junction, bridge and other track sections along the Raleigh-to-Cary corridor. Through partnerships with CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern Railway, North Carolina Railroad Co. and local governments, the department is managing an ongoing rail modernization program aimed at boosting safety and capacity by improving grade crossings, adding passing sidings, straightening curves, and installing computerized train dispatching and traffic-control systems.
