Rail News: Mechanical
On Friday, RailPower Technologies Corp. and Wabtec Corp. announced they reached an agreement under which Wabtec will supply the majority of components for RailPower's hybird locomotives and Wabtec subsidiary MotivePower Inc. will assemble RailPower locomotives at its Boise, Idaho, facility.
MotivePower also will help RailPower engineer and assemble RailPower locomotives, including a hybrid "Branch Line" unit.
The companies plan to combine RailPower's energy technology expertise and Wabtec's locomotive component and assembly capacity.
"We are already buying a variety of components from various Wabtec divisions and this was a natural evolution of our relationship," said RailPower President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Maier in a prepared statement. "MotivePower is currently producing cabs and control cabinets that are being installed on our pre-production and early production Green Goats in Calgary, Alberta, and will shortly begin assembly of an initial run of Green Goat locomotives in Boise."
RailPower markets the hybrid, battery-powered 2,000-horsepower Green Goat® and 1,000-horsepower Green Kid® switchers, which are designed to reduce engine emissions and fuel usage compared with conventional switchers.
