On Dec. 31, Trinity Industries Inc.’s Rail Group reported a backlog of 38,850 rail cars, a new record and the fifth-consecutive quarterly gain. The backlog increased more than 90 percent compared with the company’s 18,700-car backlog on Dec. 31, 2005.

The Rail Group set the previous quarterly backlog record of 32,200 cars on Sept. 30, 2006.

During the fourth quarter, Trinity received orders for 10,000 cars — mostly tank and coal cars, covered hoppers and auto racks — and delivered 6,300 cars. For all of 2006, Trinity received orders totaling more than 42,000 cars and completed deliveries totaling more than 25,000 cars.

“Orders during the fourth quarter reflect our ability to … shift production as necessary to meet market demand for certain rail-car types,” said Trinity Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Timothy Wallace in a prepared statement.
