Portland port picks Anacostia & Pacific to form rail switching firm

The Port of Portland, Ore., recently selected Anacostia & Pacific Co. Inc. to form a rail switching company designed to serve port customers.

The port plans to improve service by better utilizing the area's rail infrastructure capacity, according to a prepared statement.

Anacostia & Pacific executives expect to develop the switching company's operating plan along with officials from the port, and line-haul Class Is Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific Railroad.

In 1997, the short-line holding company formed Pacific Harbor Line Inc. to perform similar services at the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.

In addition to Pacific Harbor Line, Anacostia & Pacific owns and operates New York & Atlantic Railway Co., Louisville & Indiana Railroad Co., and Chicago SouthShore & South Bend Railroad.
