Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Memphis Area Transit Authority recently opened the Madison Avenue extension of the Memphis Trolley Line.
The two-mile extension provides rail access between the city’s largest employment centers — the central business district and medical center.
Completed ahead of schedule and $19 million under budget, the project included building six new stations and a 61-space park-and-ride lot. The authority will add three refurbished vintage trolleys and one new replica vehicle to its existing 14-trolley fleet.
By 2020, the agency expects daily ridership to increase from 2,100 to 4,200 passengers. The authority is planning another light-rail line between the medical district and Memphis International Airport.
