Military Times has named Union Pacific Railroad and Amtrak to its 2018 list of the top 100 best employers for veterans.

Amtrak was ranked 21st on the list, while UP was 68th. UP, which appears on the list for the eighth time, was the only Class I among the top 100 this year.

Rankings are based on recruiting, mentoring, on-the-job training and spouse employment.

"Military veterans have safety and leadership experience, as well as a proven ability to work in challenging environments," said Sherrye Hutcherson, UP's senior vice president and chief human resource officer, in a press release. "These qualities are what we look for in all of our employees."

About 22 percent of Amtrak's employees and 17 percent of UP's employees are veterans. UP has an employee resource group known as UPVETS, which is dedicated to serving veteran employees and the communities they live in.

Also appearing on Military Times' top 100 employers list were GE (ranked 73rd) and Siemens (ranked 97th). The complete list is available here.
