Union Pacific Railroad's Big Boy No. 4014 steam locomotive is embarking on its first coast-to-coast tour this year in celebration of America's 250th anniversary. The west leg of the tour kicks off March 29.

The world's largest operating steam locomotive will head west to California from Cheyenne, Wyoming, on March 29 for the west leg of the tour. It will end April 24 in Cheyenne, UP officials said in a press release.

The tour will make several stops along the route, with displays for the public planned for April 10-11 in Roseville, California, and April 18-19 in Ogden, Utah. The tour schedule is available here.

Big Boy will be joined by two commemorative locomotives, including UP's newest No. 1776 — America250, which features the emblem of the America250 Semiquincentennial Commission, the national nonpartisan organization established by Congress to lead the nation’s 250th anniversary, UP officials said.

The tour is a tribute to the role of railroads in building and unifying America, UP officials said. The eastern leg of the tour is anticipated to start in late spring. More details will be announced soon.

"We are proud to honor our nation’s great history and legacy of innovation with our heritage locomotives. For the first time, we will share the Big Boy with communities on the East Coast, operating it from ocean to ocean," said UP CEO Jim Vena. "America has never been afraid to dream about what’s possible – and neither is Union Pacific as we carry the grain that feeds families, the steel that builds cities and the household goods that stock store shelves."
