Union Pacific Railroad yesterday hosted U.S. Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer for a tour of the railroad's training center and Harriman Dispatching Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
The visit was a stop on Chavez-DeRemer's 50-state "America at Work" listening tour to gather insight on workforce development and job creation across the county, UP officials said in a press release.
On her tour, Chavez-DeRemer learned about the training that goes into developing UP's workforce. UP anticipates that its proposed merger with Norfolk Southern Railway would lead to the creation of 900 net new union jobs, UP officials said. The Class Is in December 2025 submitted their merger application to the Surface Transportation Board for approval.
"Union Pacific is helping power our economy by investing in the skilled workforce that keeps our supply chains moving," said Chavez-DeRemer in the press release.
