• VTG Rail Inc. has assumed the business activities of SC Rail Leasing America Inc. (SCRL), a subsidiary of Sumitomo Corp. of America, VTG officials said in a prepared statement. Financial terms were not disclosed. The VTG-subsidiary, formerly known as Texas Railcar Leasing, will operate as VTG Rail in the North American market. VTG Rail took over more than 2,000 freight cars primarily used to transport agricultural products, coal, salt, and other minerals. The operating business of SCRL, including its existing customer relationships, will be incorporated into the new company, as will SCRL’s employees.
• Thales has obtained a contract from Société de Transport de Montréal (STM) to install a communication system with a broadband radio network. The Thales system comprises a management system, more than 250 wayside radios, onboard radios, antennas for installation throughout tunnels and on STM’s train fleet, network security devices and CCTV cameras for monitoring passenger flow at station platforms, according to a Thales press release. The system is slated for completion in November 2013.
• Westport Innovations Inc. has obtained an agreement with Electro-Motive Diesel Inc. to integrate Westport’s high-pressure direct-injection technology and natural-gas fuel system into an EMD locomotive provided by CN. Westport will provide its core technologies for the engine and fuel system, as well as intellectual property; EMD will contribute expertise to integrate the natural-gas engine, and related components and controls to create a working locomotive platform, Westport officials said in a prepared statement.
• RailWorks Corp. named Benjamin Levy, executive vice president and general counsel; Robert Cummings, chief information officer; and Dan Aghdam, vice president of corporate development. Levy most recently was deputy general counsel for Maersk Inc. Cummings previously served as project director of global enterprise resource planning implementation for publisher Harper Collins, and Aghdam most recently worked for Turner Construction.
• Trinity Industries Leasing Co. (TILC) named Jesse Crews chief investment officer. He will be responsible for developing the company’s secondary market capabilities, including acquiring and syndicating rail assets and leases. He has more than 30 years of experience in the equipment leasing and finance industry. Prior to joining TILC, he was chief operating officer of Willis Lease Finance. He also has held executive leadership posts at Fortress Investment Group, and was president and chief executive officer of GATX Capital Corp.
