The North Carolina Railroad Co. (NCRR) has awarded a $600,000 NCRR Invests grant to Great Southern Wood-NC Inc. for the design and construction of on-site rail infrastructure at a planned lumber treatment facility in Scotland County, North Carolina.
The lumber company plans to invest $40 million in the manufacturing facility, which will be the company's 17th treatment plant, NCRR officials said in a press release. It will be located at Laurinburg-Maxton Airport.
Great Southern Wood produces pressure-treated pine and distributes other building materials in 28 states and Washington, D.C. Once the new facility is operational, the company will receive and distribute a minimum of 421 rail-car shipments annually by 2030. Great Southern Wood expects the project to create more than 40 full-time jobs.

Through NCRR Invests, the railroad company uses private revenue to fund rail projects that attract new employers, expand existing industries and keep North Carolina competitive. Since launching in 2016, the grant program has funded more than $18 million in rail-related improvements.
