Operation Lifesaver Inc. (OLI), Operation Lifesaver Canada and the Mexican Association of Railroads are leading a rail safety awareness campaign Sept. 21-27 that highlights the importance of making safe choices around tracks and trains.
In 2025, more than 2,300 people in the U.S. were injured or killed in railroad crossing collisions or trespassing incidents, OLI officials said in a press release. See Tracks? Think Train® Week in the U.S., known as Rail Safety Week in Canada and Mexico, reminds the public to be alert and take an active role in preventing track tragedies, they added. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the awareness campaign in the U.S.
The 2026 campaign features daily themes tailored to specific audiences. Topics this year include trespassing prevention, emergency notification system signs, transit rider safety, professional driver safety and OLI volunteer recognition.
A number of freight railroads, passenger railroads and transit agencies are supporting the OLI campaign with their own awareness efforts. For example, CPKC police departments in the U.S. and Canada are leading public outreach campaigns to teach rail safety awareness to young children, and the Indiana Rail Road Co. will host an "Officer on a Train" event on Sept. 22. The railroad is inviting law enforcement personnel, elected officials and media to join railroad officials for a short train ride, during which a live video feed will show passengers the real-time view from the front of the locomotive.
