The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) on Feb. 4 approved over $400,000 in federal funds for safety upgrades at a grade crossing in Meigs County.

Watco Corp.'s Kanawha River Railroad (KNWA) will install flashing lights and gates at the Leading Creek Road crossing in Rutland. Operated by Watco since 2016, the short line covers over 350 miles in Ohio and West Virginia. The KNWA interchanges with Norfolk Southern Railway in Columbus, Ohio, and in Elmore, West Virginia, and with CSX in Point Pleasant, West Virginia.

Federal funding of $405,859 will cover all project costs, PUCO officials said in a press release. All work must be completed by Nov. 4.
