The Michigan Department of Transportation last week announced 32 projects will receive state grants to help fund grade crossing surface repairs and improvements.

Grants are funded by the department's 10th annual Local Grade Crossing Surface Program. The Michigan Legislature appropriated $3 million for the program.

The list of 2026 recipients is available here.

Selected on a competitive basis, the projects were awarded for grade crossing surface improvements. The projects range from minor asphalt repairs to installing new track and surface materials.

The program offers 60% funding for eligible projects, with railroads responsible for the remaining 40% of costs. All repair work is performed by the railroad company and its contractors, with cooperation for detour routes provided by the local road agencies. The railroad and local road agency are responsible for scheduling the construction work.

"Transportation safety is a high priority for MDOT, and these projects will provide safe, smooth surfaces when completed," said MDOT Office of Rail Director Peter Anastor in a press release.
