The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) last week approved over $740,000 from the state's Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF) to pay for automatic warning devices and approach upgrades at the Canyon Road grade crossing near Nora, Jo Daviess County.

Approved funding of up to $615,556 will cover 95% of the estimated warning signal design and construction costs. CN's Chicago, Central & Pacific Railroad will cover the remaining 5% of warning device installation cost and any future maintenance, according to an ICC press release.

The GCPF will pay 95%, up to $19,000 of expenses associated with right of entry, railroad flagging and railroad protective liability insurance, ICC officials said. The remaining approved funding, up to $112,890, from the GCPF will pay for roadway approach rehabilitation design and construction.

All work must be completed by June 18, 2028.
