Grade crossing project planned along California rail corridor

Federal and local officials are expected to gather Thursday to mark the start of construction on a new four-track railroad bridge over Fairway Drive in Industry, Calif.

Coordinated by the Alameda Corridor-East (ACE) Construction Authority, the work is part of a larger project aimed at improving safety at 55 grade crossings along the corridor in the San Gabriel Valley.

A four-lane roadway will run under the bridge, which will carry both freight and Metrolink trains, according to ACE officials.

Currently, 25,000 vehicles and 49 trains travel along the Fairway Drive crossing daily, and four train-vehicle collisions have occurred at the area over the past 10 years, ACE officials said.

The $141.8 million grade separation project at Fairway Drive will be completed by the summer of 2018, and it's expected to create more than 2,500 jobs, ACE officials said in a press release.

Additional grade separation projects are planned at Durfee Avenue in Pico Rivera, Calif., and at Fullerton Road in Industry. ACE officials believe they'll help mitigate the adverse effects of trade growth along the corridor.
