The Port of New York and New Jersey began 2026 with notable increases in total volume, exports, autos and rail activity. Total volume in January reached 749,906 20-foot-equivalent units (TEUs), up 4% compared to a year ago.
Of that total, 58,522 containers moved through the port by rail, an 11.5% increase, and 30,758 autos moved through the port, a 30.2% increase, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's "Breaking Waves" newsletter.
Exports rose 13.9% in January compared to January 2025, totaling 112,426 TEUs, while imports fell 1.5% to 372,973 TEUs.
CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway provide direct on-dock rail access to the port's ExpressRail Terminals; New York New Jersey Rail provides additional local freight service.
