Operation Lifesaver Inc. (OLI) in Canada is seeking nominations for the 2009 Roger Cyr Award for Public Rail Safety. Named after the late founding national director of OLI Canada, the award recognizes an individual’s excellence in and dedication to rail safety in the nation.

“Roger was instrumental in introducing Operation Lifesaver in Canada 26 years ago, and it changed the face of railway safety in this country,” said Dan Di Tota, national director of OLI Canada, in a prepared statement. “The award is our salutation to his memory; we will continue to encourage and recognize people and programs that have taken the extra step towards reducing crossing collisions and trespassing incidents in Canada.”

Nominations will be accepted until March 31. Nominees must be certified Operation Lifesaver presenters, associates and/or volunteers. Nominations can be emailed to Linda Purdy of the Railway Association of Canada at lindap@railcan.ca.

The winner will be announced during 2009 Rail Safety Week, which begins April 27. OLI Canada will present the award at its 2009 annual conference to be held in September.
