The Maywood Station Museum, in Maywood, New Jersey, has completed a several-month project to restore and repaint the museum’s historic locomotive and caboose.
Locomotive #206 was built in 1942 by the American Locomotive Company in Schenectady, New York, and served the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway (NYS&W) until retirement in 1986. The 1000-horsepower, diesel-electric, model S2 locomotive is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; it was acquired by the museum in 2008 from the United Railroad Historical Society. The locomotive has been repainted in its 1960s/70s-era colors, museum officials said in a press release.
Caboose #24542 was built in 1971 by the International Car Company in Kenton, Ohio, for the Penn Central Railroad and retired by Conrail in 2005. It was repainted to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Chris Dach of Dach Decker Roofing of Maywood performed metal restoration work, painting preparation and painting; I.D. Sign Design & Graphics of South Hackensack created the artwork, decals and decal applications.
The Maywood Station Museum occupies the historic 1872-built NYS&W Railroad Station. The museum collection contains photographs, documents, maps and artifacts covering the history of the station, the NYS&W and local railroads. The museum is also the official site of the NYS&W’s Technical & Historical Society's archive of thousands of drawings, maps, track diagrams, photos, timetables, documents and records.
