The New Jersey Department of Transportation is accepting applications for funding through the  2026 Rail Freight Assistance Program (RFAP).

The RFAP annually provides $25 million to improve the freight-rail network in New Jersey, NJDOT officials said in a press release.

Funding is awarded in a competitive process, with an emphasis on projects that are significant to port commerce connectivity, connect existing freight-rail lines to port facilities, and upgrade existing tracks to a 286,000-pound load carrying capacity.

RFAP provides up to 90% of the estimated cost of chosen projects, while the applicants are responsible for the remaining costs. Applicants also must have an approved eligibility assessment done through New Jersey's online system for administering grants electronically prior to applying for funding. More information on the RFAP can be found here.
