The Intermodal Association of North America's (IANA) latest Intermodal Volume Index (IVI) reading shows the projected IVI in July reached 106.8. That's lower than June's index of 107.7, but still the second-highest reading so far in 2026 and significantly above the 2017-19 baseline of 100, IANA officials said in a press release.
IANA launched the volume index in May 2026. The industry activity measure provides an early estimate of what’s happening in the intermodal sector, before official monthly figures are released.
"This monthly pulse check on the health of North American intermodal freight ... in a single number indicates whether the market is expanding, flat or contracting relative to its underlying trend," said IANA Director of Economics Andrew Sibold when the measure was launched.
The July estimate again confirms that the strength recently noted in the intermodal market is real, Sibold said in the press release.
"We are anticipating the trend of domestic-led growth to continue this month fed by steady demand and capacity restrictions on long-haul trucking," he said. "These factors will likely persist in Q3, elevating intermodal demand as we enter the peak shipping season."
