The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) has drafted its Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP), which calls for $5.5 billion to fund 380 public transit and highway projects from 2027 through 2030.

CTDOT will solicit public input on the draft plan from May 13 through June 12.

Major rail-related projects called for in the plan include track improvements on the New Haven commuter rail line operated operated by MTA Metro-North Railroad; rehabilitation of a motor vehicle bridge over the Thames River, the Northeast Corridor and Providence & Worcester Railroad track; replacement of platforms at the New Haven Union Station; improvements to the New Haven State Street Station; transit facility upgrades; and transit vehicle fleet replacements.

Just under 30% of the funding will support transit systems, including rail, bus and rideshare systems. The plan designates $1.1 billion for transit capital projects and operating costs; $13.8 million for public transportation operating assistance; and $3.4 billion for highway and bridge capital projects.

The Federal Transit Administration and Federal Highway Administration are slated to provide $4.5 billion for the projects, with the state providing $932 million and local funds contributing $45 million toward the total budget, said CTDOT officials.

Draft documents can be reviewed on CTDOT's STIP webpage.
