advertisement
BNSF Railway Co. is spending about $23 million to upgrade lines in Alabama and Texas.
Six maintenance crews comprising about 200 workers currently are upgrading track between Reese and Adamsville, Ala. To be completed in mid-February, the $13 million project calls for replacing 65,000 ties and seven track miles of rail.
In Texas, four maintenance crews comprising about 130 workers are upgrading track between Galveston and Temple, and Alvord and Rhome. By mid-February the crews will replace 50,000 ties and 22 track miles of rail at a cost of about $10 million.
To complete both projects, workers will use various pieses of equipment, including cranes, welders and ballast tampers. The crews will replace rail at a rate of nearly one mile per day.
