On Thursday, seven BNSF Railway Co. maintenance crews will begin replacing rail and ties on three lines in Arizona and New Mexico.

About 250 workers and contractors will replace nearly 150 track miles of rail and 150,000 ties between Clovis and Jarales, N.M; Baca, N.M. and Winslow, Ariz.; and Crookton and Griffith, Ariz.

Crews will use various pieces of equipment, including cranes, welders and ballast tampers, to replace rail at a rate of one mile per day. To be completed in April, the projects are projected to cost more than $30 million.

Meanwhile, BNSF recently was named Corporation of the Year by both the American Indian Chamber of Commerce of Texas (AICCT) and Houston Native American Chamber of Commerce.

The AICCT recognized BNSF’s efforts to support Native American businesses while the Houston chamber recognized the BNSF Foundation's efforts to work with Native Americans in South Dakota. The Class I donated $100,000 to the Oglala Sioux and Cheyenne River Sioux to help tribe members search for jobs and update their skills by establishing two community achievement centers.
