The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) on March 31 began passenger-rail service along its new Monon Corridor extension on the South Shore Line (SSL) between Chicago and the Indiana communities of Hammond, Munster and Dyer.

The Monon Corridor is SSL's first branch line, adding to the Lakeshore Corridor that connects Chicago to South Bend, Indiana, SSL officials said in a press release.

The new route provides additional service to the rapidly growing areas of Lake County, Indiana, they said. The commuter railroad also implemented a new train schedule with nearly 30 new weekday and weekend options.

The $945 million design-build corridor extension added 8 miles of track and four new stations to the SSL, according to a press release from HDR, which provided program management, environmental, engineering and grant support services for the project.
