On Monday, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell announced that Norfolk Southern Railway will acquire 1,500 new rail cars from FreightCar America Inc.

The high-capacity coal cars will be manufactured at FreightCar America's Roanoke, Va., plant beginning in May. The order is valued at more than $100 million and will support about 200 jobs, said McDonnell in a prepared statement.

FreightCar America plans to add employees at the plant during the new few months as the company prepares to produce the cars, said President and Chief Executive Officer Ed Whalen, adding that the NS order marks an upturn in production activity at the Roanoke facility.

The order is “an important step” in the Class I’s long-term plan to rejuvenate its coal-car fleet, said NS Chairman, President and CEO Wick Moorman.

“It's a recognition of a rebound in the economy, it supports a very important supplier to the railroad industry and it brings jobs back to Roanoke,” said Moorman.
