Valley Metro earlier this week began construction on the Northwest Extension Phase II project to extend light-rail service 1.6 miles from 19th and Dunlap avenues to the former Metrocenter Mall area in Phoenix.

The extension will include Valley Metro’s first elevated light-rail station, a new transit center for light-rail and bus service, a third station and a rail-only bridge over Interstate 17.

Valley Metro crews have begun utility relocation, the first phase of construction, on the north side of Dunlap Avenue just west of the existing 19th Avenue/Dunlap Station, agency officials said in a press release.

The extension recently received a $50 million allocation from the Federal Transit Administration’s Capital Investment Grants Program.
