Norfolk Southern Railway's Conway Yard reached two significant safety milestones in July: more than one year without a reportable injury and more than 500 days without a stop signal violation.
A stop signal violation indicates whether trains stop as required before entering occupied or protected track. Consistently meeting that standard over time reflects strong communication, discipline and a shared commitment to doing the job the right way, NS officials said in a "Story Yard" article on the company's website.
“This is one of the largest operations on the network,” said NS Conway Yard Assistant Superintendent Craig Pequignot. “To see this team achieve these milestones at this level of volume shows what’s possible." Conway Yard is located about 22 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
NS officials note that the yard met the safety milestones even as volume increased. Conway logged 10% more volume handled compared to the previous year, with 21% improvement in dwell time and 1,130 rail cars handled in a single shift.
