UTA to increase fares on April 1

Starting Sunday, the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) will implement a fare increase for 2012.
The action is part of a three-year, tiered fare increase program approved last year to help the agency “keep pace with increasing fuel costs, increased operating costs, inflation and the budget challenges associated with a weak economy,” UTA officials said in a prepared statement.
Base fares will increase 10 cents to $2.35; the cost of an adult monthly pass will go from $75 to $78.50 and a premium monthly pass (good on FrontRunner and Express) will rise from $180 to $189.
UTA also adjusted its fuel surcharge program so that a surcharge will be triggered when the price of diesel averages $4 per gallon over an entire quarter, agency officials said.
