Software bugs delay WMATA signage launch

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) announced Sept. 12 a temporary delay in the launch of its Passenger Information Display System (PIDS) signs while its contractor addresses software problems.
"The system did crash starting last weekend," says WMATA spokesperson Cheryl Johnson, adding that 50 signs came back online Sept. 13.
The $11 million PIDS signs would inform passengers when trains are expected, if trains are delayed and how long delays are expected to last, as well as informational and safety messages.
Software developer Charlottesville, Va.-based iNOVA Corp. is working to correct the system.
