Metrolinx study recommends electrification of two GO Transit corridors
advertisement
The Metrolinx staff has recommended proceeding with the electrification of GO Transit's Georgetown and Lakeshore corridors in phases, starting with the Air Rail Link (ARL) on the Georgetown corridor.
The recommendation stems from the Toronto-area agency's recent study of electrification for the entire GO Transit rail system and the future ARL.
The staff's recommendation was based on electrification's transportation benefits, including "journey time for our customers and a reduction in operating costs," said Bruce McCuaig, president and chief executive officer of Metrolinx, in a prepared statement. "In addition, proceeding with the recommended option for electrification is a significant step towards the Big Move's long-term vision for express rail."
The Metrolinx's board is scheduled to review the final report and staff recommendations at a meeting tomorrow. The board then will make its recommendation to the Ontario Minister of Transportation.
