Metra yesterday broke ground on an $8.1 million renovation project at the South Water Street entrance to the Millennium Station on the Metra Electric Line in Chicago.
The $8.1 million contract for the renovation was awarded to PREMIER Design + Build Group of Buffalo Grove, Metra officials said in a press release. The project is funded by money from the Federal Transit Administration and the Illinois Department of Transportation's Rebuild Illinois bond program. The work is expected to be completed in 2027.
The renovation project calls for accessibility upgrades; new entrances with improved visibility at lower South Water Street; improvements to waiting area, restrooms and staff offices; replacements of staircases, canopies and elevators; a new vendor space; new lighting, benches and signs; and new digital displays with train-tracking information.
The Millennium Station project is part of a larger effort to renovate stations along the Metra's Electric Line. The commuter railroad recently completed renovation work under the same contract at the 79th Street and Chatham, 87th Street and Woodruf, and the103rd Street and Rosemoor stations.
