MTA completes upgrades at 3 NYCT subway stations

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority this week announced the completion of extensive functional and aesthetic upgrades to three subway stations.

MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) crews worked at the Christopher Street-Stonewall and Houston Steet stations on the 1 Line, and at Park Place on the 2 and 3 lines.

The refurbishments took place while other crews replaced 30-year-old switches near Chambers Street, work that required suspension of 1/2/3 service in Lower Manhattan for four weekends in July and August, MTA officials said in a press release. NYCT utilizes outages to do work only possible when there's no train service at stations, such as repairing platform edges and repainting track ceilings and columns.

"While crews replaced critical track infrastructure that had outlived their useful lives, we took advantage of the required service outages to get additional work done to improve the customer experience at the impacted stations," said NYCT President Demetrius Crichlow. "We take service changes seriously, so we make sure to do work during those changes that ensure when riders return to their stations, they see the improvement."

Crews scraped and repaired 40,000 square feet of surfaces throughout the Christopher Street station, about 45,000 square feet at the Houston Street station and 38,000 square feet at Park Place. Over 12,500 square feet of masonry repairs were completed at Christopher Street and Houston Street, and crews repaired 3,000 feet of platform edges across all three stations. Crews also refinished benches, cleaned drains and serviced HVAC systems, MTA officials said.
