Rail News: Passenger Rail

Light-rail lines get FRA green light to use general rail system

Federal Railroad Administration and Federal Transit Administration Jan. 19 announced waiver approvals permitting two light-rail systems, San Diego Trolley Inc. and Baltimore Central Light Rail Line, to operate on the general rail system.

Maryland Mass Transit Administration and San Diego Metropolitan Transit Development Board requested the waivers under principles set down July 10, 2000, describing how FRA and FTA would coordinate use of their respective safety authorities over shared-use operations.

The Baltimore waiver recognizes that the light-rail line can conduct non-passenger movements and maintenance during the morning freight service window under appropriate safeguards.

In San Diego, however, the waiver would permit limited, and carefully controlled, overnight joint revenue operations.
