Operation Lifesaver Inc. (OLI) in partnership with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and Posner Foundation of Pittsburgh has awarded $220,000 in rail safety awareness grants to Operation Lifesaver programs in 12 states. The FRA provided $175,000 of the total grant funding.

Grants will support public education campaigns that aim to raise awareness and encourage safe behavior around tracks, grade crossings and trains, OLI officials said in a press release. Many of the campaigns are scheduled to occur during See Tracks? Think Train Week, which will be held Sept. 21-27 in fall.

"These competitive grants provide critical funding that empowers OLI state organizations to conduct highly effective public outreach, deterring the leading causes of rail-related deaths and injuries while raising awareness to reduce these tragedies," said James Payne, staff director of the FRA grade crossing and trespasser outreach division.

OLI provided the grants to state programs in California, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Washington, Connecticut, Minnesota and Missouri.
