Construction on the 5.2-mile MetroLink extension from the Shiloh-Scott Transit Center to MidAmerica St. Louis Airport has been completed, and testing is underway, MetroLink officials said in a press release.

The first full MetroLink expansion in approximately 20 years, the project extends the line from its previous terminus adjacent to Scott Air Force Base and adds a new station—the system's 39th—directly across from the airport terminal and parking lot.  The extension will open for revenue service in the coming months.

MetroLink is the St. Louis metropolitan region’s light-rail system, connecting 46 miles of rail across 38 MetroLink stations in Missouri and Illinois.

The $154 million light-rail extension was one segment of a three-part, $192 million project, which also included $32 million in new roadway infrastructure and a $6 million, 4.5-mile extension of the MetroBikeLink Trail. The multimodal investment is designed to strengthen regional connectivity, expand transportation options and support long-term economic growth throughout St. Clair County and the bi-state region, officials said.

The project was funded through a partnership between the state of Illinois and the St. Clair County Transit District (SCCTD), including $127 million from the Rebuild Illinois Capital Program and $65 million from SCCTD. The project was completed without federal funding and delivered on time, officials said.

Key project partners include the SCCTD, Illinois Department of Transportation, Bi-State Development/Metro Transit, St. Clair County, MidAmerica St. Louis Airport, Gonzalez Companies and the Southwestern Illinois Building Trades Council, as well as dozens of prime and subcontractors, officials said.
