The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority's (LACMTA) board last week approved a $5.56 billion budget for fiscal-year 2016, which begins July 1.

The budget contains no fare increases or major service updates, LACMTA officials said in a press release.

The agency allotted $1.5 billion for maintaining current levels of service, and $2.1 billion for capital projects.

Under the budget, transit operators and nearby cities will receive $1.4 billion in subsidy funding, LACMTA officials said.

Five rail projects will be under construction in FY 2016, including the Crenshaw/LAX light-rail line and the Westside Extension of the Purple Line subway. Other projects in the planning/engineering phase during FY2016 include the Airport Metro Connector, the South Bay Metro Green Line Extension and the Gold Line Eastside Extension Phase II.

Meanwhile, the agency announced a partnership with car-sharing service Zipcar to provide cars at 10 of its park-and-ride locations. A total of 20 Zipcars will be available, with two at each of the 10 locations.

Members of the service can reserve a car by hour or day, LACMTA officials said.
